Aim of the Course

The course is intended to provide the candidate with the legislative requirements and comply with HSG 47 ‘Avoiding Danger from Underground Services’ and GS6 ‘Avoidance from Danger of Overhead Electric Power lines’

Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to enable the candidate to understand the risks when working with or near to underground and overhead services and implement suitable control measures to prevent injury to themselves or others.

Course Content

Underground Services

  • Safe systems of work when carrying out excavation work
  • Understand risk and implications of damage to underground services
  • H&S legislation relating to excavations and underground services
  • How to identify different types of service
  • Permits to dig
  • Utility service plans
  • Site observations
  • Understand the principles of Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Genny
  • Operational modes of a CAT & Genny
  • How to use the CAT & Genny
  • Site scanning practices and methods

Overhead Lines

  • Dangers overhead lines
  • Safe work in the vicinity of overhead lines

Practical Session

  • CAT & Genny use

At the end of the course the candidate will be expected to complete a short test and a certificate will be issued on completion to each candidate.
